Reports indicate that up to 90% of North Americans have back pain problems at some time in their life. Billions of dollars are spent every year to treat back pain, billions more are lost through work absences.
Herniated discs can occur anywhere from the neck all the way down the spine, but L5S1 is the most common source of pain.
This lumbar region is subjected to tremendous weight and stress in the course of normal daily life. Lifting, bending and twisting motions that are necessary for normal activity place great stress on the discs in the spine, particularly at the L5S1 level.
Herniated disc at L5 S1
L5S1 is the location of the sciatic nerve that that goes down the legs to the feet. Problems at this juncture are so common that we refer to “Sciatica” as the symptoms of pain, tingling, and numbness that are associated with the herniated disc at L5 S1. Due to accident or normal wear and tear, the disc can begin to bulge. This puts direct pressure on the nerve as it comes out of the spinal cord, causing pain and numbness down the legs.
There is no magic treatment for herniated discs
Surgery is only appropriate for about 10% of patients. Even then, it is only after an extended program of exercise and therapy that surgery should be considered. With the right diagnosis and therapy, the body will normally recover and heal the damaged area in a few months.
The most important first step to treat a herniated disc at L5S1 is to obtain the correct diagnosis.
The treatment and therapy to follow requires professional guidance. The orthopedic specialists of Cuba have demonstrated a world-renowned expertise to diagnose and treat all forms of back problems.
