Herniated disk surgery

Herniated disc problems cause suffering and incapacity for many people.

Pinched nerve, bulging disc, or “slipped disc” are other terms used to describe a common but complex problem.

The spinal disc is a bit like a donut, with a tough exterior and gel-like interior. It acts as a shock absorber between the vertebrae in the spine. If the exterior sheath of the disc is damaged, the material inside the disc can start to bulge out, applying pressure on the surrounding nerves. This damage to the disc can be due to many causes, including sports or automobile accidents.

The most common cause of disc problems is simple aging. As the person gets older, the outer sheath of the disc becomes worn and parts of the disc can begin to bulge, putting pressure on the nerves.

The most common herniated disc problems occur in the lower back, at L4-5 and at L5-S1. This is the location of the sciatic nerve which can cause pain that radiates from the back, down the legs to the toes.

Herniated disc surgery is normally only applicable for about 10% of patients. Surgery is always considered a last resort, after non-surgical treatments do not give the desired results.

Non-surgical treatments include rest, chiropractic treatments, physiotherapy and spinal injections. For the majority of patients, the body will slowly absorb the herniated part of the disc within 3 to 6 months of non-surgical treatment.

There are a number of surgical treatments possible. For the simplest, the bulging part of the disc can be removed to stop the pressure on the nerves. The most severe problems will require a complete discectomy, the removal of the disc.
